Guided Walk: The Cumbria Way - Detailed Itinerary

Ulverston To Coniston: 14 miles/22.5km

The market town of Ulverston with it's charming cobbled streets, will be your first nights accommodation. The Cumbria Way begins with a long but undulating days walk over fields criss-crossed with drystone walls into the National Park. The scenery takes on a more rugged feel as you head over moorland to picturesque Beacon Tarn. The path then drops down to the beautiful view of Coniston Water, the third largest lake in the Lake District. Walking along the lake is a joy, through woodland with Grizedale beyond and skirting the glistening waters to Coniston and your nights accommodation. The lakeside has an excellent cafe, 'The Bluebird', that was frequented by Donald Campbell during his world water speed bids. Why not wind down with a trip around the lake on 'The Gondola', a Victorian steam boat.

Coniston To Great Langdale: 11 miles/18.5km

Leaving Coniston behind, the walk reaches Tarn Hows, a popular beauty spot that offers views towards the Helvellyn range and Langdale Pike. Tranquil woodland walking now leads to a detour to view the impressive waterfall at Skelwith Force and back to the path at pretty Skelwith Bridge. Following the river, the way opens up to beautiful Elterwater, one of the smallest lakes that offers a huge impact with Great Langdale rising above. The village of Elterwater is a good place for refreshment before heading through the valley of Great Langdale and to your accommodation for the night.

Great Langdale To Rosthwaite: 8 miles/13km

Branching off to the right of Great Langdale, we pass through the valley of Mickleden. There are some most impressive views of Langdale Pike as we now ascend Stakes Pass. The rewards at the top are majestic, a whole panorama of peaks to enjoy. The path reaches 480m and heads through two pretty valleys, Langstrath and Borrowdale with it's beautiful valley views and on to your accommodation in Rosthwaite where you will undoubtedly meet walkers who are traversing the Walk the Cumbria Way Path.

Rosthwaite To Keswick: 8 miles/13km

The walk leads you along the River Derwent to peaceful Derwent Water, one of the most scenic lakes in the Lake District. It has four islands in the centre and experiences real changes in scenery and mood with the weather. The trail heads through woodland and to Keswick, your nights accommodation. The town is blessed with the impressive Skiddaw moorland above and the gentle Derwent Waters below. It is a charming place, with great shops and restaurants making it the main centre for Lake District tourism. A simple stroll down to the water, a boat trip or even a performance at the lakeside theatre all make for a memorable evening in beautiful Keswick.

Keswick To Caldbeck: 14 miles/22.5km

Leaving Keswick, the way heads for Skiddaw with it's splendid isolation, or alternatively trail through the valley passing the spectacular Whitewater Dash Waterfall, before heading up the Cumbrian Way's highest point at High Pike. You are rewarded with excellent views reaching across to Solway Firth and up to the Scottish border. Dropping down High Pike marks the end of the Lake District, then onwards through farmland and lanes to Caldbeck, and your nights accommodation. Caldbeck is a traditional fell village with timeless character in an area not well known to tourists but blessed with impressive scenery.

Caldbeck To Carlisle: 14 miles/22.5km

Today's walk offers a flat section of the way following the meandering River Caldew. The trail passes through pretty woodland, fields and farmland to Carlisle and your nights accommodation. Visit the town's cathedral and Carlisle Castle, built by the Normans in 1092 which withstood the seize of William Wallace during the Scottish War Of Independence. Revel in the satisfaction of having walked the Cumbria Way, a truly glorious walk through a world famously beautiful County.

Please be aware that slight variations to these itineraries may have to be made due to availability of accommodation.
